At Hunterston Castle in West Kilbride, Ayrshire, Scotland, there is an ancient charter signed by seal of King Robert II (the Bruce's grandson--first in the line of the House of Stewart), granting the lands to William Hunter, the 10th Laird, on May 2, 1374. The earliest record of Hunters in Scotland dates back to 1116, where reference is made to William Hunter (the 1st Laird) being a witness to the Inquisition of King David I.
