At Hunterston Castle in West Kilbride, Ayrshire, Scotland, there is an ancient charter signed by seal of King Robert II
(the Bruce's grandson--first in the line of the House of Stewart), granting the lands to William Hunter, the 10th Laird,
on May 2, 1374. The earliest record of Hunters in Scotland dates back to 1116, where reference is made to William Hunter
(the 1st Laird) being a witness to the Inquisition of King David I.
The Hunters have had their roots at Hunterston in North Ayrshire since the latter years
of the 11th Century. It is one of the few Scottish Families to still reside at its original place of
settlement in Scotland. Hunterston Castle is the traditional seat of the Hunter family of Hunterston.
The aim of the 30th Laird, Madam Pauline Hunter of Hunterston, is to provide a focal point for all
Hunter Clan members worldwide, by ensuring that Hunterston Castle is preserved for present and
future generations of Hunters. The Castle provides the perfect centre for all the Clansfolk.
Restoration of the front of the Castle and the creation of a Clan Hunter Genealogy Library will
help to strengthen the traditions of the Clan.
